Empathy map usage

- The tool most commonly called an empathy map is a bit of a misnomer. You aren't documenting someone's empathy is a situation or for a product, rather you're looking to represent what you know about a specific user or user group in order to build empathy for them. Empathy is a commonly used but not always well-understood term in UX. There are actually multiple kinds of empathy but in this context, we're talking about the ability to deeply understand another person and their perspective. You don't necessarily need to share their feelings or agree with their point of view but you need to get where they're coming from so you can make decisions that consider their stance and needs. With that in mind, an empathy map is a tool to quickly summarize a user or type of user to help others understand them.
