Embracing Practice in Product Design

- When was the last time you practiced something that was new to you? Did it feel awkward, exciting, or maybe you felt a little nervous. According to author Malcolm Gladwell from Outliers, it takes roughly 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery in a field. What this also means is we need to put in the time to get better. The skills we're talking about aren't the skills you were born with. These are the skills that need to be developed and maintained. Companies from around the world are starting to invest more and more into their learning and development programs. One problem I've seen with these programs is they're not integrated into the daily workflow. This integration is what I call practice. Teams can start doing this now by creating rituals around the skills they want to learn.
