Designing effective remote studies

- Designing an effective remote research study begins just the same way that you design any research effort. You have to define your goals and pick the methods that will best answer your questions and collect the right kind of data. If you need a refresher or you're not yet familiar with this, I cover it in my UX Research Fundamentals class. So check that out. In short, you need to figure out your biggest open questions, turn those into specific research objectives, and then determine the method best suited to collect that sort of information. For instance, if you know you need to learn more about the daily habits and product usage of a target user group, you might choose a diary study or experience sample. You might choose a targeted usability test to assess a new onboarding flow or interaction.
