- Cover letters feel kind of old school these days. After all, it's not like we're physically mailing our resumes to people anymore. But, it's still useful to know what to write if you need one. You should use a cover letter if you're submitting your resume on spec or through a referral. Cover letters are less important if you're using an automated application system. But if there's a space to attach one in that system, do it. That's because the letter is a chance to add depth to your resume. Resumes are by their nature pretty telegraphic. They condense all of your experience and skills onto one page. The cover letter allows you to pull the points from your resume together in a way that shows why you are a good match for this specific job.
