Compensation vs. salary

- Most first-time applicants focus on negotiating based on salary. Now what's important is that you make sure you negotiate based on compensation instead. There are two types, negotiable and non-negotiable items. Negotiable items can include your base salary, bonuses, equity, or paid vacations. The base salary is often expressed on the job listing as a range of amounts. The higher you ask for, the more you have to justify your worth, the greater amount. Now even though this might be the first time you apply for a job, if you can show additional experience, you can justify a higher salary. Be ready for a question like the salary you are asking for is in the higher range for this position, what do you think justifies that?
