- Getting old sucks.…I've worn glasses for years,…but now my close-up vision is getting worse too.…I'm becoming one of those people I used…to warn other interaction designers about.…As we age, our lenses harden,…and we can't pull objects into focus as easily.…The biggest concern here is text size.…Small text,…and, by that, I mean smaller than around 12 or 14 point,…is hard for older readers to make out.…Even if they can read it,…it's less comfortable and slows them down.…
Also, any tasks that require people to distinguish…between items that are small or close together on the screen…get harder for the same reasons.…It really helps if you make sure…there are no graphical decorations,…such as backgrounds or images, behind the text too.…They tend to act as a type of camouflage…and obscure the text that's written over the top.…The best thing to do is to default to a sensible text size,…but also make sure it's under the control of the browser…or operating system so the individual users…can make it larger if they prefer.…
