- You'd be surprised how much of an information architect's job happens outside computer systems. There's plenty of space for index cards, sticky notes, white board diagrams, and interface sketches. Most of the tools that they use were originally paper-based. And although it's sometimes harder to do the analysis from a paper-based study, you often get a different level of information back from participants when they're physically manipulating index cards and talking with you about the reasons why they're putting certain items into certain groups. That's why information architects still will often run face-to-face sessions, very much like a traditional usability test. They'll also occasionally run surveys, again, often on paper, but nowadays also digitally.
