- Isn't it curious how, despite all the increases in computing power, we still end up getting impatient with computer interfaces taking too long to respond? We have pretty firmly-set expectations. As a rule of thumb, the interface needs to respond in less than 1/10 of a second in order to feel like you're physically controlling something. For instance, panning around on a map or drawing crop marks on a photo. The interface needs to respond in less than one second in order to keep users in the flow of their task. For instance, so long as the next screen draws within one second after you click a link or tap a button, it feels like the task is progressing properly. The interface also needs to respond in less than 10 seconds in order to keep people focused on their task. So, starting up a new app or pulling back a response screen that did data queries needs to happen in less than 10 seconds. Remember, these are close to the upper limits of what's acceptable.
