Consistency

- People are creatures of habit. Once we learn one way of doing things, everything else appears to be more difficult, even if in reality, it's more efficient. That tells us two things for user experience design. One, make sure you build the most effective interface first time round by doing good user research and usability testing. And two, make sure that the interface you create is consistent across your app or site, and also consistent with other apps and sites. If you create unexpected UI, users will stumble. If users have consistent bad experiences with the UI, they may abandon it, or at least avoid using it. This is called passive avoidance. People avoid adversity by not doing something, like for instance avoiding opening PDF documents because they don't like waiting for long downloads.
