From the course: Animating a Landscape with VUE

Importing a model

- [Voiceover] In this chapter, we'll look at scene and camera layout. VUE is an amazing program for modeling digital nature, and the terrain editor has a lot of power. However, in certain circumstances, you may find that you want to model your terrain in an external program. In this example, I've got a rock island with very sheer vertical cliff faces, and because of that, the terrain editor in VUE is not an optimal tool. So I modeled the object inside of Maya as a 1/100 scale model to conform to the conventions of Maya, saved it out as a alembic file, and I can load that into VUE. By the way, if you're modeling in 3DS Max or most other programs, then you don't need to build a 1/100 scale model. Just build your object at its normal size. Let's open up that alembic document in the file menu. Choose import object. And in the exercise files for the course, there's a folder, import, go in there, and then choose rock_island.abc. Click open. And after a moment, that loads in. We can deselect it by clicking in an empty spot of the world browser, and then dolly back in the camera view with the wheel. We brought in a model that's pretty well sculpted, but we're also going to apply some displacement mapping to it. So it's going to change the end result of the shape that we see here. And that's the simple process of importing a model into VUE.
