- [Instructor] When I teach software development, I usually like to work on one long project instead of a lot of little ones. We're going to do that in this course, but we're going to make something fairly specific and not necessarily useful to a lot of people. When I was but a wee lad, a friend of mine introduced me to the world of fantasy role playing games. Now a fantasy role playing game, or RPG, involves playing a game as a character in some fantastic setting. For example, there was Top Secret, where you played the part of a secret agent. There was Call of Cthulhu, wherein you play the part of a paranormal investigator. But the undisputable king of fantasy RPGs is easily Gary Gygax's Dungeons and Dragons, where you play an adventurer with your friends, also playing adventurers, set against a world of magic, swords, and fantastic monsters all in a quest for glory and gold. Today, the term RPG usually refers to a video game, but back then, we played RPGs around our kitchen tables…
