Visual Studio Extensions are packaged into a special installer file, called a VSIX file. It gets this name from the file extension .vix. When you use the Visual Studio extension manager, it handles downloading and running the installer. This tutorial looks at the installer file in more detail, exploring the contents of the file and looking at how to use the .vsix file directly from File Explorer or the command line.
