Join Walt Ritscher for an in-depth discussion in this video Attach a debugger to a running process, part of Visual Studio Essential Training: 06 Debug and Troubleshoot Code.
- There are times when it is advantageous…to debug a running process.…For example, you are testing an application…on a Windows phone,…after 20 minutes of usage, you encounter a problem.…It would be nice to attach a debugger…at that moment.…Here's another example.…Your asp.net website has trouble on one server…on your web farm,…but only on Monday mornings.…You can't replicate the problem on your test servers.…So it would be beneficial to attach the web server…process at the critical time.…To demonstrate this, I'm using this…RobotSpeech_WPF project.…
Now, I need to run the application without…a debugger attached.…One way to do that would be to go to the debug menu…and choose Start Without Debugging.…I'll do it from the user perspective.…I'll put on my user hat and run the executable…from the hard drive.…To do that, I'll right click on the project…and choose open folder in file explorer,…then I'll drill down into the bin folder…and the debug folder,…and I'll run this basic app, _WPF.exe.…
