- [Narrator] The first rule for creating flow charts is to remember what your teachers told you in elementary school; neatness counts. So much of the value of a flowchart is visual that if your readers get lost in a swirl of arrows and boxes, it's unlikely they'll ever see and understand the real content in your diagram. The challenge of course, is that most real world processes aren't neat, they're complex, and there are lots of alternative paths. So it's much too easy to create really messy flow charts. How do you achieve neat, easy-to-read flow charts? This video contains seven best practices. Number one, start each task description with an action oriented verb. Passive descriptions generally don't tell readers what they need to know. Verbs like determine, select, customize, and write convey a sense of action and readers will understand more quickly.
