Join Jason Osder for an in-depth discussion in this video Vimeo as an online home for creative professionals, part of Vimeo Projects for Creative Professionals (2013).
This is Vimeo. But, if you're a creative professional, such as a filmmaker or musician or a wide variety of artist, you may already know about Vimeo. And, in fact, that's the first point I want to make, is that Vimeo has become a de facto home for creative professionals using video on the web. I think there are a number of reasons for this. And at the same time, it's impossible to put your finger on exactly. What makes something take off but, I do have some ideas in the case of Vimeo and creative professionals.
First, I just want to note that we're looking at the Vimeo site if you first came here, as if you had no account whatsoever, and I just wanted to come to this homepage to introduce a few ideas about why Vimeo is such a good fit for creative professionals. The first is, that if you look around this page or you look around the entire Vimeo site you will see no advertising. And that is certainly distinct from other video platforms, especially YouTube, which is fairly full of advertising. The second point I want to make, and if we scroll down and take a look at this video.
I'm going to play a second or two. (BLANK_AUDIO) And I mean that in two senses. First, the video quality on Vimeo is quite good. It's always been that way, and it's been Vimeo's marks of success.
Now other platforms, including YouTube and Facebook, have improved the quality of their video a lot, so you could argue that these days they're equal. But I also think that Vimeo has a focus on quality in terms of the content. It's impossible to say how this happens, because anyone can upload anything. But in general, the videos on Vimeo are better in the sense of being more artistic and having a higher production value. You're less likely to have a random cat video on Vimeo. The natural home for that would be Youtube.
So, my second thought about why Vimeo is such a good fit is the issue of quality. And then, third is what I would generally call attitude. And, you know? That's all over the site. From the artwork that we first looked at. And the doorway with the sparkles coming off. Sort of inviting us to enter this magical creative realm of video. To the style on the staff pick that resembles a film festival laurel. Throughout Vimeo's approach, you see a lot of personalized style, and I do think that that's the third element that makes Vimeo such a comfortable home for professionals.
So those are some broad ideas, and as we get deeper we'll look at techniques that creative professionals find useful. But, I do think, at a base line, having no ads, and having high quality video, and having a welcoming attitude, for creative professionals, are some things that make Vimeo, special in this context.
