The steps a shot goes through

- [Instructor] Movies and TV shows are broken down into scenes and scenes are made up of individual shots. Usually, these shots are recorded on set as much longer takes and only small sections of those takes are used in the final edit. The visual effects team don't want to spend team working on frames that aren't going to be featured in the final scene, so have to wait until the editor has picked the frames that they want. Work on assets, like models of creatures or whole CGI environments, doesn't depend on final shots or camera angles, so it could be started before the editor is finished. Or during the production or even the pre-production phase of the project. But the final shots can't be finished until the editor knows which shots are going to be used. After the scenes have been shot, the footage goes to the editorial department. The editor will start building the sequences, select from the preferred takes and shots as they go.
