A huge benefit of project management is having open communication with the client. This helps your client from feeling like they're kept in the dark and prevents them from freaking out. In this video, Richard Harrington discusses the benefits of using in-progress reports to keep your client knowledgeable of how their project is going.
- With projects it's all about communication.…If your client's in the dark…they'll likely start to freak out.…One of the best things you can do…in order to successfully manage a project…is to provide regular in-progress reports.…Note I said reports plural.…You're going to want…to agree upon how often…you update the client,…not multiple times a day…but a useful summary email…or a written report that describes…where things are at.…The in-progress report serves a lot of purposes…to really help the client measure progress.…
Ideally you'll communicate…where the project is at.…This will help them know…the current state.…Remember you're going to want…to be able to be proactive though.…Delaying bad news…typically only makes things worse.…This doesn't mean that you call the client…every time something goes wrong.…But if something happens…that's going to throw you off schedule…or if the client is doing something…that jeopardizes their project…or the budget…make sure you communicate it.…Something I regularly have to do is…point out to clients…
