Another core part of a colorist's toolset is the waveform monitor. This important tool can display both color and brightness in an image in a way that is objective, measurable, and clear. Once you understand the basic principles of this tool, you can quickly read other kinds of waveforms, and use them to check that your content is ready for broadcast.
- [Narrator] Waveform displays can show both…the total composite color level in your media…and the lumen levels, to explain how these work,…I'm going to show you a waveform without the color displayed.…Waveforms show all the pixels in the current frame,…the horizontal axis is taken from the image,…so the dots in this waveform that are…say 100 pixels from the left are the pixels…100 points from the left in the image and so on.…The vertical axis shows the level of luminance…for each pixel, so dots that are higher up…in this view may not be higher up in the image.…
There is no direct relationship…between the vertical axis of a waveform…and the vertical axis of the image.…And just to spell this out, if you had a dark pixel…at the top of the image, it would appear…at the bottom of the waveform.…Waveforms will display using different scales,…but the principle is always the same.…Pixels higher up on the graph are brighter…than the pixels lower down, in this example,…the left edge is showing the NTSC IRE scale,…while the right edge is showing the PAL milivolt scale.…
