Understanding the triple constraint
- One of the biggest concepts in project management that you need to understand is that of triple constraint. It means that there are three properties that every project has. The scope is the work that must be completed. What actually has to get done? This is constrained by the schedule, which really dictates the amount of time that you have, because all creative projects have a deadline. And, there is a budget, what are the financial limitations for the project itself? If it was possible, we would be able to just create forever. But even the biggest Hollywood movies have schedule constraints and budget constraints. How you balance this is really key to your long-term success. You have to think about how to keep each of these in line with each other. If the schedule is really tight, you might have to trim back the scope of work in order to meet the deadline.
