- This next piece of advice may vary depending upon the country that you're working in. But in general, you need to be very careful when working with contractors. That's because employee status is a bit of a gray line. When you have a contractor, especially one that's working with you long-term, you need to be very careful how you classify them. Many governments want to classify people as employees. After all, it's a lot easier for them. Instead of having to track down multiple individuals, it's a lot easier to collect income taxes if those people are classified as employees. This isn't really about benefits or anything else, and it's all about the government collecting the dollars that it wants. So people that are working more than a certain number of hours are often considered an employee, particularly if that work period goes on for an extended period.
