- Lighting sure has changed with the maturity of LED. So, is old school tungsten still a viable lighting option? I think it is. When we talk about tungsten as a light, we are basically describing the bulb that it uses. (chuckles) Okay, let's put our scientist hats on for a moment. An incandescent light bulb consists of an airtight glass enclosure, with a filament of tungsten wire inside the bulb, that an electric current is passed through. Contact wires and a base with two or more conductors provide electrical connections to the filament. Okay, class dismissed. Tungsten bulbs have been around forever and are used in most lamps. The color is warmer and is referred to as indoor lighting. If you're just getting started, tungsten fixtures can get you a lot of lighting, for minimal cost, and are plentiful in the used market. Trust me, a tungsten light is very versatile for great throw, and can be softened with diffusion. Yes, they get hot and use a lot of power, compared to LED. But if…
