- All right, it's time we talk about focus. Oh, wait, hold on a second. Ah. There we go. Shooting video that's out of focus is usually the number one rookie mistake made for first-time video shooters. And it's especially hard when you're by yourself. There's nothing worse than shooting all day, only to find your footage is completely out of focus. So it might be tempting to just switch on your autofocus and call it a day. However, unless you know for a fact that your camera's autofocus is really good, I wouldn't recommend it. That's because cameras with older autofocus technology can have issues determining what's supposed to be in focus in the frame. Bad autofocus tends to do what's called hunting, which is when the camera switches back and forth between different focus points as it tries to determine what to focus on.
