Tilting and panning the camera

- In this chapter we're going to look at moving the camera and how that can help you tell your story. First let's talk about tilting and panning the camera. Tilting is rotating a camera up or down on a stationary axis and panning is rotating left or right on a stationary axis. This is usually accomplished by rotating the fluid head that the camera is attached to at the top of the tripod. This is the easiest and least expensive way to get movement into a shot because most cameras are usually on a tripod head anyway. These type of heads can range in price from affordable to more expensive than a midsize car. Ideally, your tripod head should create smooth movement and have adjustable tension. Adjustable tension allows you to pull off a pan or tilt that is as slow or as quick as you need while still being able to maintain a consistent rate of motion throughout the move.
