Supporting the camera

- In the last tutorial, we looked at setting up the camera itself, and there's got to be somewhere to put it. For some camera systems, you can hold it by hand for certain shots, but that usually isn't done for entire films. Even though cameras these days are not usually super heavy, they do start to fatigue the arms after a while, and this creates very shaky, ugly shots, especially when you're using longer lenses. So, we need to use something to support the camera. Of course the most common way to support a camera is with a tripod. Many tripods also have a head at the top, where the camera's attached that allows you to tilt and pan the camera. When it comes to supporting the camera, sometimes you can even get creative. In some shots in the hut scene, we wanted the camera to be really low to the ground and my tripod doesn't get that low, so we just use a sandbag.
