- As comedy grows more sophisticated, it becomes increasingly subjective. The laughs get richer, but the risk of missing the target runs higher. That's because more factors come into play. The style of humor, the context of the scenario, the age, gender, geography, and culture of the target audience, all of these and more help determine the kind of comedy you should choose to get a laugh and deliver your message. Let's look at a few examples. Try to match the age of your humor to the age of your intended audience. Let's define our terms. The age of your audience can be literally the age of the typical person you're trying to reach. Or you might be trying to appeal to the child within each of us.
