- Streaming video means two different things: video on demand and live streaming. Both have come a long way. You can watch a very high-quality original film without feeling like you're watching a stuttering, pixelated mess, and you can also watch a live streamed event or something your friend is posting to Facebook Live and feel like you're getting pretty much the most of the image and audio content intact. VP9 is a next-generation, open source, video compression format that was developed by the WebM Project and it's being used by YouTube and Netflix and other platforms. And that can reduce that video bit rate by as much as 50%, which means basically you're getting a lot more content and it's not quite as compressed. That said, there's still some obstacles introduced by the compression process that's necessary for you to get either video on demand or live stream content.
