Risk mitigation and crew resource management (CRM)

- Risk management is the systematic application of management, policies, procedures, and practices to the tasks of establishing the context, identifying, analyzing, assessing, treating, monitoring and communicating. It is a process that we should keep in mind so that we can truly minimize the inherent risks associated with any flight. Let's get to it. Risk mitigation is the part of the decision-making process, which relies on situational awareness, problem recognition, and good judgment to reduce risks associated with each flight. Keep in mind that no person may operate a civil small unmanned aircraft system unless it is in a condition for safe operation. Many of these techniques include delegate operational tasks. Manage crew members. Recognize hazardous attitudes. Establish effective means of communication. Be open to questions and concerns of crew members. Crew resource management, or CRM, is the effective use of all available resources, human, hardware and information, prior to and during flight to ensure a successful outcome of the operation. The remote pilot in command must integrate CRM techniques into all phases of the sUAS operation. Many of these techniques include delegating operational tasks. Managing crew members. Recognizing hazardous attitudes. Establishing effective means of communication. And of course, be open to questions and concerns of your crew members. You should accept no unnecessary risk. You should make risk decisions at the appropriate level. You should accept risk only when the benefits outweigh the dangers and you should always integrate risk management into planning at all levels. You may sometimes need help to manage the tasks at hand. You could use additional crew members. You should always ensure that no one on the team becomes overloaded. The remote pilot in command identifies, delegates and manages tasks for each sUAS operation. Some obstacles that you may find include fatigue, stress, work overload and any and all distractions. So remember, accepting no unnecessary risk and using risk mitigation techniques will always help you have a safer and more successful sUAS operation.
