- If you want to stand out as the best candidate for a job, you need to research the job in advance. You want to understand what exactly the job entails. Now, the help wanted ad is a good clue or the description on the company's website, but if you can dig deeper, do so. You want to determine what skills you have that meet the requirements. And these days it's often difficult to meet every requirement. I see a lot of help wanted ads that seem to be a laundry list of all the things they'd like you to be able to do, oftentimes even for an entry-level position. So what's important here is you look at those requirements and list them out and do a self-assessment. What are you great at, and where do you have some gaps? Make sure you determine if those gaps are critical. Is it going to make you really stand out as not qualified, or is there an easy solution?
