Refining the edit: Tweaking story and scene flow

- Once you've got a version of the sequence that contains a solid audio bed of interviews, intelligently incorporated visuals, and actually kind of looks like a film, you may start to get really excited. It's taken so long to get to this point that it kind of, sort of feels like you're almost done. Don't be deceived by this false sense of security. Understand that even though you've worked hard to get here and now the film finally has a pretty decent beginning, middle, and an end, it's probably not the best beginning, middle, and an end. Things can be better. Plot points can be stronger. Characters can be more dynamic. The exposition can be more vibrant. Transitions can be clearer. The climax can pack more punch. But the day you finish your very first rough cut, you probably won't feel any of those things. You'll think it's close. So you've got to step back. I recommend taking at least two days off from it. If you can, make it three or four days. Do anything except look at the film…
