- We've talked about the ideation, organization, and formal documentation related to successful documentary pre-production. Of course, during all of this, you'll be conducting lots of research so that your ideation comes to fruition, your film framework begins to take shape, and your pitch and your proposals become trusted blueprints. All of this will help you organize the film and present your ideas to collaborators and funders. Now, however, I want to talk about research in a little more detail. When you're starting to research your documentary, each piece of information that you need to explore can be acquired by different means, and each piece of information you want to convey in the film can be presented in different ways. Let's break this down a little further. Now, there are three basic categories of assets that you can draw from, written sources, visual sources, and interpersonal sources.
