- All right, so there's a couple more things we should talk about in terms of elements of shot composition and how you would define a shot. Now the first one is something, if you're not used to looking for it, it can be subtle, and you don't really pay attention to it. And that's focus. And what we mean by that is, what portion of the frame is in sharp focus and what is soft or blurry? So for example, this shot of me, right now. I am, hopefully, in focus. I'm sharp. I'm well-defined, and the background behind me is not crazy blurry, but it's definitely softer than I am. And as the word implies, focus is not only about describing the image, but you use it as a story teller to help guide the eye of your viewer. It both helps tell them where to be looking and where not to be looking, and it can also help you sort of suggest to them what they should be identifying with.
