- Every shoot you're on has a chain of command, even if it's a two-person shoot. This hierarchy is crucial. It creates order, ensures that all jobs on set get done, it tells people who they report to, and it can also help with problem solving. It can look different per production. What can a hierarchy look like? Here is a list of the common roles that you will see on set. If you want to go more in-depth, check out the movie in chapter two called, "Key Personnel You'll Work With." What does this mean for you as the PA? You know who directly to report to. This will change from production to production, and even from task to task. Since you know who to talk to, you can catch problems as they arise and fix them. A chain of command helps you know who to take problems to if you have no idea how to fix it. It's not a good idea to go to the director about craft service problems. It's not their job to set it up.
