- How to get paid, and how to get paid on time. So let me start by saying that not all clients are created equal. I am blessed to have been working with many clients for a long time. And with some of them, I don't even have contracts anymore. We have a handshake agreement, and off we go. But I highly recommend having a written contract that specifies what is the work that needs to be done, who is doing what, what are specifically the deliverables, what are the deadlines, and what are the payment terms? Typically, you want to get paid 50% in advance to do the work and then 50% at the end when you deliver the work. You want the contract to be also very clear about expenses. If there are travel expenses, if you need to buy additional hard drives, if you need to rent a car, who is going to cover those expenses, and when? When delivering files for review, it's not a bad idea to add a watermark. That watermark clearly says this…
