- At some point, you're going to be asked to film an interview outside. Filming outside comes with its own unique challenges. Sun, rain, people, cars, sirens. Everything's around you, especially in a city, but the same principles apply inside as they do outside. Try to find a quiet space with indirect light. Let me show you some workarounds for some of the biggest challenges you're going to face filming outside. One of the major issues you're going to face is street noise. Orient your subject so their back is facing the noise, just like I am right now. My back is facing the street. My body is acting as a sound barrier to the sound, so it's not hitting the mic. This also works for winds. Put your subjects back into the wind, so the wind is not hitting your mic. The bright, beautiful sun can also ruin an interview. Having your subject directly lit by the sun like I am now can cause them to squint or cause big shadows underneath their eyes and their chin. Instead, have 'em face the sun…
