Controlling the aperture has two principal purposes. One is it's a primary means of adjusting the exposure on your sensor. The second is depth of field control. Now, while there are other means of controlling exposure in the camera like the shutter, like the ISO control, the aperture size is the principle and really only way to control depth of field. >> Now think of it this way, what's essentially happening when you adjust the aperture, is you are controlling how big the opening is. How much light comes into the camera. The strange thing for a lot of folks is that the smaller the aperture number. The bigger the hole, because it's actually referring to a ratio. And basically, this is one of the hallmarks of shooting on prime lenses. They tend to be a bit faster. Jim, in this case, we have a DSLR lens hooked up that has a slightly variable aperture as you move through the zoom. But I believe the widest it can open up is F four.
