Natural light

As filmmakers, sometimes we have to work with fast and limited tools. This often happens when shooting big role on a tight schedule. Another example is getting reactions on the street for breaking news. There's really no time to plan and set up, and sometimes this happens at midday when the light is harsh and lacks any depth and texture. We planned our shoot for a cloudy day, and as we were ready to start rolling, the sun came out. This is a typical challenge when working outside and relying on daylight. We could have prayed for some clouds to help us, or we could fix it on our own. This is a quick example where a simple tool can make a huge difference. We had the sun behind us, and we used it to light our subject's face. Unfortunately, the sunlight was too strong, and created very deep shadows under her eyes, nose, and neck. As you can see, there was no detail on the right side of her face. We could have changed the exposure on the camera or added an ND filter, but we would lose the…
