Using irradiance mapping: Part 1
- In this video we're going to make a start at demonstrating just how quick and easy it can be to set up a basic, global illumination solution using V-Ray's irradiance mapping engine. We've chosen an interior setting to test all of the GI engines we will look at in this chapter as this presents by far the biggest challenge when it comes to getting clean and believable-looking GI lighting. The very plain materials that we have added to the geometry will add to the difficulty as they will really highlight any noise or blotchiness that may show up in the GI solution. To give a quick overview of the lighting setup in the scene we can come to our Tools menu and pull up the V-Ray Light Lister. This reveals that we have just a single V-Ray Sun set up in the scene to act as our key or direct light and of course if we open up our Environment dialogue using the eight key, we also have a high dynamic range V-Ray Sky set up in 3ds Max's Environment slot.
