UX generalists versus specialists

- I think there's a trend towards recruiters wanting to find people who are UX generalists rather than specialists. So actually they don't want generalists. They want people who are specialists in a whole bunch of different techniques, everything from research through to visual design through to interaction design and who knows what else, probably front end development too. Now, those, that's become such a kind of a meme in the UX space that they've become called unicorns. This mythical beast who does all these amazing things and rainbows happen over and over again. I've seen a couple of people who can do that. But even those people, think about it, what you're really doing is wasting most of their skill set at any one point of time because they can only do one part of the job at once. It's probably better to find people who are actually specialists in one or two areas and bring those people together rather than to try and find a generalist who's that kind of jack of all trades and…
