- [Voiceover] Technology has allowed for a rapid expansion and branching off of different altered experiences. These simulated realities can be defined in three basic ways: virtual, augmented and mixed. First let's define the basic device. HMDs or head mounted displays, these are typically stereoscopic screens to immerse a viewer in a simulated or an altered world. Many are now packaged with handheld controllers to allow interaction with simulated or altered environments. Let's take a look at virtual reality. Virtual reality is a completely simulated or virtual environment that completely encapsulates the viewer. Uses for this virtual reality can vary from viewing 360 degree photos or for uses in things like presenting a prototype where materials, objects and environments can be altered. And of course, there are more complex experiences like interactive games, applications and even films. An example of the devices for virtual reality are the oculus rift and the HTC Vive.
