First, if you're looking to get in the composition you'll need a digital audio workstation, or DAW, this is a multi-track software that gives you the ability to record on your own computer. You'll need some sampler software, Native Instruments Contact is the most popular among game audio composers. You'll also need some sample instruments, items like sampled orchestral instrument, sample drums, and sample guitars. Of course if you play an instrument, like a guitar or piano, and you want to add that into your composition, you can record yourself via the DAW. Second, if you're looking to get into sound design, you'll need a lot of similar tools to composition.
