- [Voiceover] A game engine is a suite of software tools that allows you to make a video game. Normally a game engine contains most of the tools necessary to create a game for various platforms. Game engines usually combine the normal game programming, art, and sound processes into one program. The engine isn't the only software that you'll need to create a video game, but the game engine has become the centerpiece of most game development pipelines. Currently, the most commonly used engines are UDK, which stands for Unreal Development Kit, and Unity. Both of these game engines are well-developed and long-standing in the game community. Both have abundant, solid, learning resources available for free online and are well-established in professional game development studios. A portfolio made with either is a good start to working your way towards that professional career. CRYENGINE, the HeroEngine, RAGE, and the Source engine are all alternatives to Unity or UDK.
