Since we do not yet have anything in our test scene, let's open the demo project so we'll have something to explore the Scene view with. From the File menu, select Open Project, and the Unity Project Wizard comes open. What we want to do this time is we want to select from a recently open project. We want AngryBots, but if you've got a different demo project, just open it. So, select it and Open, and Unity loads the new project. Switch to the wide layout so the Scene view will take up lots of real estate.
If you remember, it's over on this far dropdown, I'm going to switch over to Wide. Notice that the Hierarchy view shows only the default camera of the new scene. In the Project view, locate the Scene icon for the project and click on it to load the scene. Here it is, right here, so we'll click it in. If you are using a project other than Angry Bots, you may need to go looking for a scene to open. In Unity, scenes are like levels, so there may be several of them and the author may have created a Scenes folder to hold them.
Scenes may also contain nothing but menus, so you may need to open a few before you find one with level-type content. In Angry Bots, you will see something like this. Let's experiment with the Scene view toolbar. At the left, you will see it set to Textured for the Display mode. Let's click on that and experiment with some of these. Wireframe is going to leave you with a bunch of black wires. Sometimes it's useful. And Text-Wire--that's the other one that we'll probably be using occasionally-- is going to show both the objects, the textures, and you can also see the wires in there as well.
So those are two we are going to use most often: Textured and Text-Wire. We're going to go ahead and switch that back to Textured now. The next button is the RGB dropdown, and it offers several other options. The next one though is the Lighting toggle. In Angry Bots, if I toggle the Scene Lighting icon off and on, there's very little difference, indicating most of the lighting has been baked into textures or that the lights in the scene have been limited in range or will only be activated at certain times.
The next button, the Game Overlay button, toggles things like background and 2D objects off and on in the view. In Angry Bots, the background images toggles off and on and the grid appears. To the right of the Overlay button is the icon that toggles sound off and on. You will only hear the sound if an object with an audio component is selected. The Gizmos dropdown on the right-hand side lets you see which 2D icons are being used to represent things like lights, cameras, and other objects, as well as letting you assign custom icons.
You can allow scaling of icons or adjust the size. If I increase the size, you can see that there are actually lots of lights and other icons in the scene. Enabling scaling prevents the icons from cluttering the scene and blocking out the 3D geometry. In the next video, we'll be going over scene navigation.
