Channel packing can save texture overhead in a game environment. Learn how Unity packs textures in the HDRP Lit Shader.
- [Instructor] Hi there, … today we're going to look at channel packing … for HDRP lit shaders. … Now, if you're not familiar with what channel packing is. … It's basically taking eight bit files. … In other words grayscale images … and packing them into RGB files. … And this allows you to use less space on the disk … and make your scenes more efficient. … Now, some of this has been built into unity … and so you should be using channel pack textures … for certain types of channels. … So let's go ahead and take a look at how this works. … So, I'm going to select the sphere … and let's go into our temp folder. … So, we'll just use this as our working area. … So I'm going to go ahead and right click … and create a material. … And the material I want to create is HDRP lit … and we can just give it a new name. … Let's just call this my material or something like that. … And let's go ahead and left click and drag it … onto the sphere. … Now, when we create this type of material, … you'll see that we have a lot of these surface inputs. …
