Welcome

- [Ina] Calligraphy comes from the Greek word "calligraphos" which means "beautiful writing". I'm Ina Saltz, and I've been teaching calligraphy for over 30 years. It's an exhilarating feeling to be able to create and shape beautiful letters using simple and inexpensive materials: ink, paper, and pen. If you've seen my other courses on typography, you know that I'm passionate about typographic letter forms. All typographic forms spring from calligraphy. Before there was a single typeface, every word was written by hand. One stroke at a time, one letter at a time, one word at a time. In this course, we're going to concentrate on the style of calligraphy dating back to the Renaissance, called "Italic". It's a beautiful and useful hand, created by using a broad edged pen. I'll introduce you to the materials, the tools, and the techniques you'll need. And I'll show you how to create and practice each individual letter. Within the shapes of these letters, you'll find timeless principles of beauty, rhythm, harmony, and proportion. These principles apply to all creative projects. When you learn calligraphy, you are also learning important design principles. The ability to make beautiful letters simply using your own hand will open up a whole new world for you. So let's get started. Let's make some beautiful letters.
