Using different materials and tools

- Once you've learned the basics there's a vast world of calligraphic possibilities. You can think more creatively about writing tools, writing surfaces, and media. You could experiment to get a whole variety of different effects. Your tools can be store-bought or homemade. The earliest written marks were made with sticks which had tips burnt in a fire. This created a kind of charcoal - the blackened edges were used to draw on cave walls. Egyptians pressed marks into wet clay. Brushes made using animal hair have been used for writing in Asia for thousands of years. Modern calligraphers use all kinds of tools. Each of these tools produces a different effect. Try making your own tools. You can even make nibs out of cat food tins and soda cans, they're called "meow nibs." Here are a couple of pieces by the calligrapher Karen Charatan using her meow nibs.
