Using color

- You may have noticed that many of my own projects use color. As a calligrapher and artist, I just love color. I particularly love writing on a background that is medium or fairly dark with light tones of paint. Yes, we are going to work with paint. Specifically, we will work with gouache, which is an opaque water-based paint ideally suited for calligraphy. You'll find my recommendations for gouache in the exercise files. I like to work with gouache partly because colored inks don't give you the richest tones, and they're not opaque enough to cover darker backgrounds. Colored inks also tend to be watery so it can be hard to control the flow of the ink. This makes it hard to maintain crisp hairlines on your letters. gouache will also cover any pencil lines that you rule up. Pencil lines will show through a colored ink and they will not be erasable.
