- Ready to tackle more letters? Let's get started. First, rule up several practice sheets. But this time, use the 3.8 millimeter Pilot parallel pen. Make a new little scale of five nib-widths using the smaller nib. Now each line of writing will occupy three spaces to leave room for ascenders and descenders. I'd like you to make a little X at the baseline of your X-height of writing. This is what happens if you don't do that. You might forget to leave room for the ascenders and descenders. So, three full spaces for each line of writing. A little X at the beginning of each line is helpful. So, you'll be writing at this size. I'm going to be writing at a slightly larger size so that you can see the structure of the letter forms. Observe my movements and the direction of my strokes, and keep your chart right in front of you. The N family of letters is at the top of your chart. So we're going to start out on the second line, so that the ascenders have room here and the descenders have room…
