- There are two things you should remember about all punctuation. Punctuation should blend with the forms around it, and punctuation should never draw attention to itself. It's just there to be functional, and should be as minimal as possible. Most punctuation is made at a 45 degree pen edge angle. The punctuation you'll use most often are the period and the comma. So let's start with those. The period sits right on top of the line here, so your first stroke is going to be just like that. Very simple. And the comma starts the same way, just curves down, tiny little marks. The semicolon and the colon sit within the five nib-widths' height. Let's just show you where that five nib-widths' height is. There it is right there. So semicolon and the colon. Just a little bit of space between those two marks. The hyphen should sit right here in the middle of that space of the x height and here you might want to flatten your nib just a little bit. Keep it short. If you need to do an m dash or an…
