Preparing to write capitals

- Are you ready for the capital letters? The capital letters, also called majuscules are quite different from the small letters. Majuscules are based on the classic Roman capitals also known as capitalis monumentalis. The name says it all. The majuscules are majestic. They are important. They are monumental. We say that the small letters or minuscules hold hands and they dance. But the capitals are individuals and need to stand apart. In other words, they need their space. The capitals are different in a few major ways. First, they are 7 1/2 nib widths high. So when you prepare your practice sheets for writing capitals each space is 7 1/2 nib widths high. The between spaces are three nib widths high. That's because with the exception of the letter J and Q all the capitals are the same height. Later on when we combine the capitals with the small letters you'll rule up your practice sheets differently. But for now, use these measurements. The capitals are written with your pen edge…
