Combining capitals and small letters

- When you're combining capitals and small letters, remember that the small letters are happy to be close to one another, while the capitals need their space. A fun way to start practicing combining capitals and small letters is by writing an alphabetical list of names, like this one from one of my students. Another student used the names of flowers. You can use any related word groups, each starting with a capital. This detail of a student practice sheet shows that the capitals go exactly halfway up into the ascender space, since the capitals are 7 1/2 nib widths high. When you rule up your practice sheets, remember that each line of writing needs three spaces to accommodate the ascenders and the descenders. Each space is five nib widths high. You won't have a separate line for the height of the capitals. You can easily eyeball that distance. But if you find that your capitals are too small or too large, you can always add an extra guideline until you get the hang of it. In general…
